Lake turkana camping-Baringo camp Kenya-Great rift valley lakes Kenia-kenya safaris-africa vacation-african travel-kenia holidays.

7 Nights 8 Days Lake Turkana Via Lake Baringo.

Lake Turkana 2,500 sq miles (6,475 sq km), NW Kenya and SW Ethiopia, The 170-miles (274-km-) long lake is the focus of interior drainage and has no outlet.

Lake Turkana, formerly known as Lake Rudolf, is a lake in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, with its far northern end crossing into Ethiopia.

It is the world's largest permanent desert lake and the world's largest alkaline lake. The water is potable but not palatable.

It supports a rich lacustrine wildlife. The climate is hot and very dry.The rocks of the surrounding area are predominantly volcanic.

Central Island is an active volcano, emitting vapors. Outcrops and rocky shores are found on the East and South shores of the lake, while dunes, spits and flats are on the West and North, at a lower elevation.

Lake Turkana National Parks are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sibiloi National Park lies on the lake's eastern shore, while Central Island National Park and South Island National Park lie in the lake. Both are known for their crocodiles.

The expedition is in a purposely-built truck, this rugged 1,600 km safari to vanishing Africa tackles some of Africa’s worst roads, crosses dusty deserts and high mountains and takes you to the sparkling waters of the Jade Sea Lake Turkana.

Lake Baringo is, after Lake Turkana, the most northern of the Great Rift Valley lakes of Kenya, with a surface area of about 130 km² and an elevation of 3200 ft.

The lake is fed by two rivers, El Molo and Ol Arabel, and has no outlet; the waters seep into lava. Despite this, it is one of the two freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley in Kenya, the other being Lake Naivasha.

It lies off the beaten track in a hot and dusty setting and over 470 species of birds have been recorded there, occasionally including migrating flamingos.

The lake has several small islands, by far the largest being Ol Kokwe Island. The main town on its shore is Loruk, while smaller settlements include Kampi ya Samaki.

Day 1: Lake Baringo: Depart Nairobi in the morning stopping at the top of the world to view the great Rift Valley. Lunch at Nakuru and arrive at Lake Baringo late afternoon. Watch out for hippo while you shower. Overnight at the campsite.

Day 2:South Horr: Cllimb out of the Rift Valley in the morning towards Maralal and the red-ochred Samburu people, who are still nomadic and proud. Then another spectacular climb up Losiolo and down past Baragoi to South Horr where we camp next to a small clear stream.

Day 3: Lake Turkana: Break early in the morning for Lake Turkana. The rough road gets worse as we descend across ancient lava flows towards the Jade Sea and the Oasis Loiyangalani lying between the lake and Mt. Kulal. We arrive at our permanent beach campsite just outside Loiyangalani soon after lunch and settle in our traditional Turkana huts with a cool breeze blowing from the lake. Indeed a perfect place to relax protected from scorching sun and heat characteristic of the harsh climate of this remote area.

Day 4: Lake Turkana: We spend the day relaxing and bathing only interrupted by a short boat excursion to visit the surrounding areas where crocodiles and birds may be spotted. In addition, we visit Loiyangalani and the community settled there while in the evening we may visit one of the Turkana Manyattas for traditional dances under a star studded sky at an extra cost if clients wish. Unforgettable experience.

Day 5: Maralal: Up the Horr valley and back to Baragoi, camping further South at Maralal.

Day 6: Samburu: We arrive at Samburu park around lunch time and settle in our Permanent campsite beautifully set under a canopy of trees on the edge of Uaso Nyiro River .

Day 7: Samburu; A day game viewing in the park. Elephants abound: you may see lion, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Grey's zebra and oryx.

Day 8: Nairobi: The road back to Nairobi passes over the high shoulder of Mt. Kenya. Lunch on the way arriving in Nairobi by later afternoon
